This was indeed a very lazy weekend, in fact I spent a straight 16 hours slipping from TV to slumber and back. The food feast I promised myself previously was postponed a bit as I was invited on Friday to a friend’s birthday celebration; was supposed to be a surprise but three women planned it and swinging between whether or not to host the surprise at all, no one brought a cake and I went cake hunting between 3 Wal-Mart stores and a closed down Kroger to find the cheapest pound of Black Forest I had tasted. Besides that search and discovery mission of a $8.23 cake, it was a very very lazy weekend with me sleeping most of the time and watching the TV series 24 between sleep sessions.
I have, off-late, discovered a very captivating TV series that I had no idea existed and this has diverted my addiction of Hugh Laurie as Dr. House to Kiefer Sutherland. This series is called 24 and it is fascinating in its format, tracking 24 hours of a national crisis per season. Kiefer is awesome although, his character as Jack Bauer does come across as a bit of ‘Jason Bourne’ like. The non-stop action is larger than life.
The choice of Presidents is glorified weak characters but does send one message through. The President of US is not a man in control and completely dependant on his machinery, susceptible to deception and vulnerable – now this I believe is a very true depiction.
The plot starts out interesting but does get dragged a bit towards the end when it becomes a bit obvious in its attempt to fill in episodes. I am down to Season 5 and this has been consistent. By the 17th or 18th episode in every season, you do tend to get to a point where you wish it would move on a bit faster.
Overall a 4-star. Definitely better than the much obsessed CSIs and Law & Order series, which are rather cliché and who wants to see obviously fabricated stuff – I’d definitely recommend it.
The show has won numerous awards, including Best Drama Series at the 2003 Golden Globe Awards and Outstanding Drama Series at the 2006 Primetime Emmy Awards. Kiefer Sutherland has been awarded Best Actor – Television Series Drama at the 2001 Golden Globe Awards, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 2006 Primetime Emmy Awards. At the conclusion of its eighth and final season, 24 became the longest-running espionage-themed television drama ever.
