10 things I dread facing when I come back to India - in no particular order of importance! Much of this is a symbol of how Western economies spoil the individual than criticism. Some, of course are criticisms.
- Traffic speeds - I have been spoilt at 100 km/h+ speeds; now thinking about driving between 0 - 30 km/h for prolonged periods is rather disturbing
- Low Internet Speeds - Having spent over two years when the lowest speeds I am used to are in the range of 2 MBPS+, I am scared of what pittance passes for broadband in India
- Haggling (or bargaining) - The one thing I was never good at and never succeeded at mastering is the art of haggling. I just love the world where there is a universal MRP for everything
- Humidity - I sweat a lot and keeping up with the humidity that strikes through most of the year is scary. I did not like it even when I was in India
- Offline - Everything that I remember having to do, required me to go somewhere in India to interact with a bunch of people who have half an idea of the meaning of efficiency, I have been transacting online for the last 2 years; and it scares me to have to go back to it
- Punctuality (or the lack of it) - Time has no meaning in India to most people; 5 minutes can mean anything between 15 minutes up to a day making life rather unpredictable for the people who tend to a range of 2 - 3 minutes of delay
- Uncertainty - Uncertainty of basic services (phone, electricity, water, etc.) that I have been spoilt to expect 99.9% service levels in the last two years, will be a scary thing to go back to
- Poor Customer Service - Customer Service is almost universally non-homogenous but, from what I hear, most service providers in India are defining new benchmark troughs in the level of customer service; I have heard of not one service provider for any services having good (or by standards here, even acceptable) customer service
- Interference - If I had to rank, this would come on top; in India I dread the social interference in personal life where everyone has a comment or criticism to everyone else's lifestyle from what you wear to where you party
- Definitions of Normal - What is defined as normal in India is never an outcome of personal choice; I dread the concept of "this is how it is normally done" that is so overpowering that the opportunity for doing anything differently poses the most discouraging hurdles
